A NEW TUNNEL LIGHTING PROJECT IS UNDERWAY ON HIGHWAY 61 IN MINNESOTA
New LED luminaires and a smart lighting control system have been installed in the Lafayette Bluff and Silver Creek Cliff tunnels, located on MN-61 in Two Harbors!
Built in the 1990s, the tunnels are located along the Lake Superior shoreline, an area prone to harsh winter conditions that cause rapid corrosion of the equipment.
In 2019, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) inspected the existing tunnel lighting supports to verify their structural capacity for the design phase of the new LED lighting system upgrade. The inspection revealed that the existing system was outdated, parts were difficult to find, and the high-pressure sodium system was inefficient.
Subsequently, the MnDOT decided to carry out a retrofit project estimated to cost approximately $4 million and that includes 293 LED luminaires, the TLACS-EM lighting control system, and the SCADA interface from Nyx-Hemera Technologies.
This new lighting system will fulfill MnDOT objectives of improving user safety and visibility, especially during the winter, and reducing maintenance, closures, and costs.
