CASE STUDY – LA LINEA TUNNEL
Nyx Hemera Technologies installed the tunnel lighting control solution TLACS-EM in the longest tunnel in America: the La Linea Tunel.
CASE STUDY
The La Línea tunnel, located on Highway 40 in Calarcá, Cajamarca, Colombia, with a length of 8,650 meters, is the longest tunnel in the Americas. The project is located on the road that crosses the departments of Quindio and Tolima in central Colombia, making the road more passable and considerably reducing journey times between Bogotá and the port of Buenaventura.
GOAL:
The goal was to install a lighting control system that could control and rapidly adjust the luminaires in the entrance and transition zones. Given that the lighting levels required in the different tunnel zones varied considerably because of the length of the tunnel, the orography and the changing weather conditions, it was important to ensure visual adaptation and safety. A low-cost maintenance system was also required, easy to operate and reliable.
SOLUTION:
The TLACS-EM solution from Nyx Hemera Technologies was chosen for its simplicity: installation and maintenance are simpler than with other control technologies, as there is no need to install control cables. The solution’s carrier-current technology makes it possible to use existing electrical wiring.
KEY BENEFITS:
- Increased safety thanks to lighting that adapts to the tunnel entrance zone.
- Lower operating and maintenance costs.
- Lighting can be adapted throughout the day and in all areas of the tunnel.
- Reduced energy consumption and longer luminaire life.
RESULTS:
Implementation of the TLACS-EM lighting control solution in the La Linea tunnel, as well as in the 23 smaller tunnels in this project, has resulted in energy savings of between 25% and 55%, improved safety and simplified maintenance.
