Tunnel Modernization
Challenge
The I-670 Tunnel’s aging lighting infrastructure required modernization to enhance visibility, improve driver safety, and increase operational efficiency while reducing long-term maintenance and energy costs.
Solution
A comprehensive smart tunnel lighting solution was deployed, integrating the TLACS-EM lighting control system with TLACS-SCADA for centralized monitoring and management. The system controls and monitors 1,800 LED luminaires throughout the tunnel, providing intelligent lighting adaptation, real-time performance monitoring, and advanced diagnostics from a single platform.
Results
The upgraded system transformed tunnel operations by delivering measurable safety, operational, and energy-efficiency benefits:
- Enhanced driver safety through optimized lighting levels, particularly in critical entrance and exit transition zones.
- 24/7 remote monitoring and control of all 1,800 luminaires via the TLACS-SCADA platform.
- Improved maintenance efficiency with centralized diagnostics, fault detection, and asset management capabilities.
- Significant energy savings using high-efficiency LED lighting and intelligent control strategies of 60% .
- Increased system reliability and operational visibility, enabling proactive maintenance and reduced downtime.
- Lower lifecycle costs, supporting a more sustainable and cost-effective tunnel operation.
The modernization project demonstrates how intelligent lighting controls and centralized SCADA integration can significantly improve tunnel safety, performance, and operational efficiency while delivering substantial energy and maintenance savings.
