CARLIN TUNNEL IN NEVADA
2 tunnels in Carlin, Nevada.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), has invested in improvements to Interstate 80 in the Carlin Tunnel area of Nevada. The $31 million project will improve nearly 3 km of the highway located 6,83 mi east of Carlin and 13,67 mi west of Elko.
Part of the renovation involved the tunnel’s lighting system, which included new LED fixtures. The new lighting system uses a sophisticated intelligent luminaire control system, TLACS, which monitors and adjusts the light level based on the light conditions outside the tunnel. The new system provides better visibility for drivers as they transition from the light outside to the light condition inside the tunnel. This improved visibility increases safety as drivers remain confident on the road and are less likely to slow down or brake when entering the tunnel.
