PRUDENTIAL TUNNEL I-90, BOSTON, MA

Built in 1965, the Prudential Tunnel carries Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike). It is a 0.6-mile-long, two-direction, six-lane tunnel.

The extensive project involved removing and disposing of the old luminaires and structural supports; furnishing and installing new stainless-steel structural supports for conduits and junction boxes; repairing tunnel walls in areas receiving new support; and installing new LED luminaires and a lighting control system (TLACS).

For the lighting, the work involved replacing the luminaires and lighting control system in the Prudential Tunnel and ramps A, B, and D, as the existing system had reached the end of its expected service life.

The TLACS-EM lighting control solution from Nyx Hemera Technologies was chosen for its many advantages. Using power line communication (via the existing wiring that powers the luminaires), this solution allows contractors and operators to reduce installation costs by eliminating the need for additional control wiring and conduits inside the tunnel.

Since each luminaire is independently controlled with the TLACS-EM solution, the number of lighting stages can be increased for better dynamic lumen control, resulting in energy savings of up to 45%. Additionally, each luminaire is equipped with a Local Product Controller (LPC) that supervises the LED driver and provides proactive remote maintenance reports and usage monitoring.

Characteristics:

  • Length: 0.6 miles
  • 1 x tunnel 2-bore / bi-directional, 6 lines
  • 1706 LED Luminaires (total)

Solution: TLACS-EM, SCADA
