ROBERT-BOURASSA TUNNEL, QUEBEC CITY
Highway 740 (A-740), also known as the Robert-Bourassa Highway, is an urban highway serving Quebec City. It connects Laurier Boulevard, the commercial heart of the Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge borough, via a 0,186 miles road tunnel. This tunnel is used by more than 90,000 vehicles every day.
The Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTMD) decided to modernize the tunnel to ensure the longevity of the structure, the safety of users, and the upgrading of the lighting system to current standards. The project involved replacing 944 LED luminaires and installing a lighting control system to adjust the lighting according to actual outdoor conditions, thereby avoiding the effects of “black holes” and glare at the tunnel entrance, in addition to achieving energy savings. The TLACS-U lighting control system from Nyx Hemera Technologies was selected for its ease of installation and maintenance, made possible by the company’s expertise in power line communication.
It is important to mention that the MTMD had identified a problem: birds were nesting on the light fixtures and damaging them. Nyx Hemera Technologies therefore designed a custom steel bracket equipped with bird protection to protect the equipment.
Finally, the Nyx team also conducted a photometric survey in the tunnel after commissioning to ensure that lighting levels met the Department’s requirements and to verify that the tunnel lighting complied with the RP-8-18 recommendations established by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES).
The TLACS-U solution facilitates the control and dimming of luminaires. Full control and monitoring can be carried out from a remote control station or locally using a touch screen installed in an on-site cabinet.
