NEW LIGHTING & CONTROL SYSTEM: I-5 TRUCK TUNNEL – CALIFORNIA
I‑5 truck tunnel | Newhall pass interchange
Part of one of California’s most complex highway systems (up to 21 lanes), the I‑5 Truck Tunnel north of Los Angeles is a 170 m (0.1 miles), 2‑lane truck‑only tunnel designed to separate freight from passenger traffic—enhancing safety and efficiency on a critical corridor.
Managed by the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS), this important and most-used infrastructure plays a key role in optimizing traffic flow and supporting the safe movement of goods across California.
This critical tunnel is equipped with a smart lighting system and control designed to:
- Deliver uniform, and high-quality illumination tailored for heavy vehicle traffic
- Enhance driver visibility and safety under all operating conditions
- Dynamically adapt lighting levels based on real exterior luminance
- Real-time remote monitoring
- Automated fault detection and proactive maintenance alerts
The system is powered by TLACS (Tunnel Lighting Adaptive Control System) developed by Nyx Hemera technologies.
Characteristics:
- 2 unidirectional tunnels
- 2 electrical kiosks
- 1,127 LED luminaires
- Length: 0.1 miles
Solution:
- TLACS‑EM
- TLACS SCADA
